What I Do at My Intership

The Erasmus+ Program gave me the opportunity to carry out an internship in a European country of my choice. The flight and the accommodation are paid from the Erasmus funds, which is really great if you don’t earn much as student or apprentice. My internship takes place in the IT department of an Irish company. I move, fix or replace desks, PCs, monitors, keyboards, all kinds of computer hardware, although I would have preferred to code as application developer. Well, you gotta eat what’s on the table. I had a good insight on the work system integrators do. When I prepared new workstations I needed to note down the floor port and patch it accordingly at the switches in the server room. Moreover the different monitor connections like DVI, VGA and display port are now branded into my brain. I setup countless PCs and sorted hardware in the store room. They use a ticket system where you can simply work those tickets off. At the beginning I needed some help, as I didn’t knew the locations and work process. My colleagues are very kind, in general the people here are very kind. I even got chocolate for installing a second monitor for someone. For lunch I would bring my own sandwiches to the canteen, since it’s cheaper than the food they offered. Sometimes I went to eat at the mall nearby. There is a diner called Eddie Rockets, which I don’t have in Germany.
All in all living in a foreign country is always a good experience. You have to adapt to new people and surroundings, which is challenging. For that I want to give you the quote that I have found on one of the monitors: „If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t make you grow.“
